The Wicked Witch of the West broadcast signal intrusion was a television signal hijacking occurring in Kansas City on the night of April 20, 1995. The intruder, Scottish expat Grace McHawkins dressed up as a witch resembling the Wicked Witch of the West managed to hijack into KKAN-TV Channel 20
At 8:07pm Central Time during an episode of the show Luckie The Cute Girl Mouse people reported that the screen was starting to twitch alot. The twitching only got more violent by every second and after 2 minutes the screen black. After a few seconds of a black screen a woman dressed up as a witch appeared on the screen in front of a hypnotizing background. The woman said in a distorted voice "You better stop watching this program, or I will turn you little kids into pans." This phrase was said in Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Polish, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Swedish, Danish, Russian, Norwegian, Finnish, Icelandic, Arabic, Greek, Hungarian, Czech, Thai, and Hebrew. The witch said "Don't leave and you're love will fade to the depths of hell, along with you're family". The last 20 seconds were of the witch saying "I told you to change the channel but you failed to listen, now I will turn you into a frying pan!" The woman then held up a supposed "magic wand" (which was actually a stick) and "fired" at the screen (with a visible hand spraying yellow Silly String at the camera behind the stick).
It cut to NTSC color bars followed by mild static before the hijacking ended. KKAN quickly put up a "Technical Difficulties" card and after, a live announcer (Harvey Johnston) said "If you're wondering what happened, so am I!", laughed, and said "Max Headroom has returned!".
The incident made national headlines and was reported in the NBC News at Sunrise the morning after the incident. An investigation was done but failed to find out who hijacked the signal. It wasn't until 1999 when Harvey Johnston the man who did the announcement after the hijacking, gave an anonymous tip to the Kansas City Police Department. The woman Grace McHawkins was arrested on several counts of hacking and was sentenced to lifetime probation. She revealed that she formerly worked for the Greeny Channel but got fired 2 nights before the hacking. Enraged from this and knowing she would not have enough money to feed her 2 sons she hijacked the signal as part of revenge against The Greeny Channel.
Grace died in 2009 due to compilations from a fatal stroke. She was cremated and her ashes were flown to Scotland, her home country. The Wham-O Air Blaster (alongside the equipment used in the hijacking) were sold on eBay for $500,000,000 in 2013 to Greeny Phatom animator James Sharp.
